Blepharoplasty in Istanbul: A More Refreshed and Natural Look with Eyelid Surgery

Sometimes, the first signs of facial aging appear around the eyes. Even after a good night’s sleep, tired-looking eyes, excess skin on the upper eyelids, or prominent under-eye bags can make our facial expressions appear different from how we actually feel. Moreover, these changes do not always begin at an advanced age. Genetic factors, skin characteristics, and the anatomy of the eye area can cause them to become noticeable even at a younger age.

For individuals concerned about these changes, blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is one of the surgical options that may be considered.

For patients living abroad who are considering aesthetic surgery in Turkey, blepharoplasty in Istanbul includes different surgical approaches for both the upper and lower eyelids. However, successful eyelid surgery depends not only on removing excess skin but also on evaluating the entire eye area.

During an eyelid surgery consultation with Op. Dr. Behçet Şahin, the anatomical characteristics of the eyelids, overall facial proportions, and the patient’s expectations should be evaluated together. The goal of well-planned eyelid surgery is not to change a person’s natural gaze but to reduce signs of aging around the eyes while maintaining a natural appearance.

Why Does the Eye Area Age Earlier Than Other Parts of the Face?

The skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin in many other areas of the face. As a result, changes in skin elasticity and tissue volume can become more noticeable in this region.

As we age, the skin of the upper eyelids may become looser, the supporting tissues around the eyes may change, and protruding fat compartments in the lower eyelids may lead to the appearance of under-eye bags.

However, not every change around the eyes is caused solely by aging.

Some individuals naturally have fuller upper eyelids, while others develop noticeable under-eye bags at a young age. The gradual descent of the eyebrows can also create the appearance of excess upper eyelid skin.

These differences make individualized assessment essential in eyelid surgery.

For one patient, upper eyelid surgery alone may be sufficient. For another, the lower eyelids, eyebrow position, or changes in volume around the eyes may also need to be evaluated.

What Changes Can Be Achieved with Blepharoplasty in Istanbul?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct certain anatomical concerns involving the upper or lower eyelids.

Excess skin on the upper eyelids may cover the natural eyelid crease in some patients. In more advanced cases, sagging may become significant enough to affect the field of vision.

In the lower eyelids, protruding fat compartments may create a puffy or tired appearance.

The changes targeted by eyelid surgery vary from patient to patient.

Adjusting excess upper eyelid skin, reducing lower eyelid bags, or creating more balanced contours around the eyes may form part of the surgical plan.

However, blepharoplasty is not a procedure that eliminates every sign of aging around the eyes on its own. Concerns such as crow’s feet, skin pigmentation, and drooping eyebrows may require different approaches.

Looking Younger or Looking More Refreshed?

Many patients considering eyelid surgery do not want their facial appearance to change completely. They want to continue recognizing themselves in the mirror while reducing the tired expression around their eyes.

This is where the concept of natural-looking results becomes particularly important.

Removing excessive amounts of skin or fat during eyelid surgery may negatively affect the natural contours of the eye area in some patients.

Preserving the natural upper eyelid crease and carefully evaluating the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek are especially important.

A youthful-looking eye area does not always mean tighter skin. Sometimes, preserving natural volume is just as important as removing excess tissue.

During a surgical consultation with Op. Dr. Behçet Şahin, the relationship between the eye area and the rest of the face should be considered when planning changes appropriate to the patient’s anatomy.

Upper Eyelid Surgery: Restoring a More Balanced Appearance to Heavy Eyelids

Excess skin on the upper eyelids is one of the most commonly noticed changes around the eyes.

For some patients, this is primarily an aesthetic concern. For others, upper eyelid skin may sag toward the eyelashes and affect daily activities.

During upper blepharoplasty, excess skin and other tissues, when necessary, may be surgically adjusted.

The incision is generally planned along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This approach aims to allow the resulting scar to blend with the natural anatomical fold after healing.

However, not every case of upper eyelid drooping can be corrected through blepharoplasty.

Drooping eyebrows or problems involving the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid may create a similar appearance. In cases of true eyelid drooping, known as ptosis, different surgical procedures may be required.

Therefore, it is important to determine whether the concern is caused solely by excess skin or by other anatomical factors before surgery.

Lower Eyelid Surgery: Under-Eye Bags Are Not Always Caused by Lack of Sleep

Under-eye bags are among the aesthetic concerns that many people attempt to reduce through cosmetic skincare products.

However, prominent under-eye bags are not always related to sleep habits or skincare routines.

Protrusion of fat compartments in the lower eyelids, changes in the supporting structures around the eyes, and reduced skin elasticity may contribute to their development.

During lower blepharoplasty, these fat compartments may be repositioned or selectively adjusted according to the patient’s anatomy.

Some patients experience both under-eye hollowness and puffiness. In such cases, it may be necessary to evaluate the entire under-eye contour rather than simply removing fat.

The position and structural support of the lower eyelid are particularly important during lower eyelid surgery. Inappropriate tissue modification may lead to complications such as downward pulling of the eyelid or an inability to close the eye completely.

Therefore, a detailed anatomical assessment is essential before lower blepharoplasty.

What Should Patients Consider When Choosing a Surgeon for Blepharoplasty in Istanbul?

Patients considering traveling from abroad to Turkey for eyelid surgery should evaluate the surgeon’s training, relevant surgical experience, and the healthcare facility where the operation will be performed.

The eyelids are delicate structures not only from an aesthetic perspective but also in terms of eye health.

Protecting the eyes, maintaining proper tear distribution, and ensuring complete eyelid closure are important for everyday function.

Therefore, eyelid function should be considered just as carefully as aesthetic appearance when planning blepharoplasty.

Additional assessments may be necessary, particularly for patients with dry eye symptoms, previous eye surgery, thyroid disorders, or problems affecting eyelid position.

During a preliminary consultation with Op. Dr. Behçet Şahin, patients should provide detailed information about their medical history and concerns involving the eye area to help determine their suitability for surgery.

Traveling to Istanbul for Blepharoplasty: How Should International Patients Plan Their Treatment?

For international patients considering eyelid surgery in Turkey, the process involves more than simply choosing an operation date.

Patients living in another country should coordinate their travel arrangements, medical examination, surgery, and recovery period.

Before traveling, preliminary information may be collected about the patient’s medical history, medications, and aesthetic expectations. Assessments based on photographs may help discuss possible treatment options.

However, eyelid laxity, tear function, and the anatomical relationships around the eyes cannot be adequately assessed through photographs alone.

Therefore, the final surgical decision should be made after an in-person examination.

Following surgery in Istanbul, it is important to complete the necessary follow-up appointments and plan the return journey according to the patient’s recovery.

What Happens During Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Eyelid surgery may be performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.

In upper eyelid surgery, the incision is generally planned along the natural eyelid crease.

For lower eyelid surgery, the surgical approach may involve an incision just below the eyelashes or on the inner surface of the eyelid, depending on the patient’s anatomy.

The most appropriate method is determined by considering the amount of excess skin, the condition of the fat compartments, and the supporting structures of the eyelids.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed during the same operation in suitable patients. However, this decision should be based on the patient’s overall health and surgical needs.

The First Days After Surgery: How Does the Eye Area Heal?

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and a temporary sensation of tightness may occur around the eyes following blepharoplasty.

These symptoms may be more noticeable during the first few days. In many patients, a significant portion of the swelling and bruising decreases within the first one to two weeks.

However, complete tissue healing and scar maturation take longer.

During recovery, patients should follow their surgeon’s postoperative care instructions, protect the eye area, and attend scheduled follow-up appointments.

Some patients may experience temporary dryness, excessive tearing, or changes in eyelid movement.

Symptoms such as severe eye pain, sudden changes in vision, or rapidly increasing swelling on one side require urgent medical evaluation.

What Determines Blepharoplasty Prices in Istanbul?

Blepharoplasty prices in Istanbul may vary depending on the extent of the surgical procedure.

An operation involving only the upper eyelids has different requirements from a procedure addressing both the upper and lower eyelids.

Factors that may influence the cost include the surgical technique, type of anesthesia, hospital facilities, and additional procedures.

International patients should also confirm whether accommodation, transfers, and postoperative services are included in the treatment price.

However, the decision to undergo eyelid surgery should not be based solely on price comparisons.

Because of the delicate anatomy around the eyes, surgical suitability, safety, and postoperative follow-up should be priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blepharoplasty in Istanbul

Is there a specific age requirement for eyelid surgery?

There is no single ideal age for blepharoplasty that applies to everyone. Eyelid anatomy, excess skin, under-eye bags, and overall health should be evaluated together.

Can upper and lower eyelid surgery be performed at the same time?

Both procedures may be performed during the same operation in suitable patients. However, their suitability should be determined after a medical examination.

Does blepharoplasty completely eliminate wrinkles around the eyes?

No. Blepharoplasty primarily addresses certain anatomical concerns involving the skin and fat tissues of the eyelids. Fine wrinkles or skin texture problems may require different treatments.

Will eyelid surgery change the appearance of my eyes?

Surgical planning generally aims to preserve the patient’s natural eye shape. However, the postoperative appearance may vary depending on anatomical characteristics and the procedure performed.

When can international patients fly after eyelid surgery?

The appropriate time to fly depends on the extent of the operation, the patient’s recovery, and the necessary follow-up appointments. Return travel should be planned according to the surgeon’s assessment.

Can blepharoplasty eliminate dark circles under the eyes?

Dark circles may have different underlying causes. Discoloration caused by pigmentation or visible blood vessels may not improve with blepharoplasty.

Are eyelid surgery and a brow lift the same procedure?

No. Blepharoplasty addresses certain anatomical concerns involving the eyelids, while brow lift procedures aim to change the position of the eyebrows. In some patients, both areas may need to be evaluated together.

Blepharoplasty in Istanbul: Preserving a Natural-Looking Gaze

Signs of aging around the eyes do not develop in the same way for everyone. In one patient, excess upper eyelid skin may be the primary concern, while in another, under-eye bags or changes in volume around the eyes may be more noticeable.

Therefore, there is no single ideal appearance that applies to every patient undergoing eyelid surgery.

For international patients planning to travel to Turkey for blepharoplasty, appropriate surgical assessment, realistic expectations, and postoperative follow-up are particularly important.

During an eyelid surgery consultation with Op. Dr. Behçet Şahin, suitable treatment options should be evaluated according to the patient’s anatomy around the eyes and overall facial appearance.

The goal of eyelid surgery is not to give the eyes an entirely different appearance, but to restore balance to the eye area while preserving the patient’s natural facial expression.
